El Segundo, CA has one of the busiest and most accessible public beaches in all of California. El Segundo's beach is formally named Dockweiler Beach. Dockweiler Beach is located along Vista del Mar Boulevard, just west of the town of El Segundo. Dockweiler Beach stretches approximately three miles between El Segundo and Playa del Rey and is one of the main flight paths for LAX airport. While enjoying your time at the beach you will see planes fly over from LAX and shipping vessels anchored in the bay.
Dockweiler beach is the number one beach for Los Angeles families that live inland and are looking for a cool place to spend the day during the summer months. It is not the cleanest, quietest and most picturesque beach. Don't expect any restaurants at El Segundo's beach. If you forgot to bring your own food then you will have to realie on the local burrito buggy to quench your hunger.
There's lots of sand to set up your beach blanket, there are first come volleyball nets and a bike path that is perfect for skateboarding, rollerblading, running, and biking. The path stretches as far north as Redondo Beach and is virtually empty during the off months. During the peak summer months the bike path is busy and long bike rides are slightly a pain. The beach also includes a picnic area, restrooms, and a playground. Swimming, boogy boarding,and surfing are popular here, but Dockweiler does not have the best waves in the city. If you are feeling really crazy there is also a hang gliding facility on the northern section of the beach. Dockweiler Beach has a large public parking lot which charges by the day and for those willing to walk, there's limited free parking on the hill above the beach for the few who arrive early. Beach fires rock the El Segundo beach party! One of the Highlights to Dockweiler beach in El Segundo is the ability to have a fire on the beach. This is one of the few beaches in Los Angeles where fires are permitted on the beach. They still do not allow alcoholic beverages here. Be smart, put your beverage in a plastic cup and don't offend the other patrons and you should be OK to drink to your heart's content.
